Paradise Road

Paradise Road follows a group of women from several countries who are captured by Japanese forces during the Second World War. After the fall of Singapore, they are interned in a camp on Sumatra. Among them is Adrienne Pargiter, a trained musician who organizes a vocal ensemble with other prisoners. The choir becomes a way for the women to hold on to their dignity and to each other through the hardships of camp life.

Bruce Beresford directed and wrote the screenplay, and the film was produced by Sue Milliken and Greg Coote. It was Beresford's twelfth feature as director, arriving between Last Dance and Double Jeopardy. Glenn Close leads the cast as Adrienne, with Frances McDormand, Pauline Collins, Cate Blanchett, Julianna Margulies and Jennifer Ehle among the principal performers. The credited production involved forty cast members and sixty-one crew.

The film was released in 1997 and runs 122 minutes. Made for about 16 million US dollars, it took roughly 2 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
