Nick Flynn works at a homeless shelter in Boston, where he crosses paths with his estranged father, Jonathan. Jonathan is a con man who presents himself as a poet, and the two had long been out of touch. As Nick faces troubles in his own life, he is torn over whether to reach out to his father again while watching Jonathan’s decline at close range. The story is drawn from the younger Flynn’s memoir about his relationship with his father.
Paul Weitz directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced the film with Michael Costigan and Andrew Miano. It is the eighth of the thirteen films he has directed, arriving after Little Fockers and before Admission. Robert De Niro plays Jonathan and Paul Dano plays Nick, with Julianne Moore as Jody Flynn, Olivia Thirlby as Denise, Eddie Rouse as Carlos and Steve Cirbus as Jeff among a credited cast of 64. It runs 102 minutes and was released on March 2, 2012.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10, based on 287 votes, which suggests a modest response from those who have seen it. It was made by Focus Features, Tribeca Productions, Depth of Field and Corduroy Films as an American drama.
