Showing Up
Short description
Showing Up is a comedy-drama set in the Portland art world, following Lizzy, a sculptor who is preparing for an exhibition that could change the direction of her career. Over the days leading up to it, she tries to balance her work with the demands of her family, her friends and the people around her, and finds that the turmoil of her everyday life feeds into what she makes.
The film is directed by Kelly Reichardt, who wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Raymond. It is her sixth feature, arriving after Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff, Night Moves, Certain Women and First Cow, and it continues her long collaboration with Michelle Williams, who plays Lizzy. The cast also includes Hong Chau as Jo, Maryann Plunkett, John Magaro, André 3000 and Amanda Plummer.
Released in April 2023 by A24 and filmscience, Showing Up runs 107 minutes, with a large credited cast and crew behind it. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 7,400 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 167 reviews places it well above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The artwork created by Michelle Williams’ character is actually the work of artist Cynthia Laity from Portland, whose work director and screenwriter Kelly Reichardt has followed for a long time. Furthermore, Laity is very close friends with Jonathan Raymond, with whom Reichardt co-wrote the screenplay. She actually wrote the screenplay with Laity in mind, but when she called the artist, she found out that Laity was planning to retire. Laity coached Williams before filming, and, by participating in the film, decided not to retire. By the end of filming, she had created so much new artwork that her studio was completely full.
