Short description
Highlander III: The Sorcerer continues the story of Connor MacLeod, the immortal Scottish warrior played by Christophe Lambert. Long after the events of the first film, Connor believes he has finally won the Prize and lives quietly with his adopted son. That peace ends when Kane, a powerful immortal sorcerer voiced with menace by Mario Van Peebles, is freed from centuries of imprisonment beneath a mountain in Japan. Kane, who once destroyed Connor's teacher Nakano to steal his magic, now wants the Highlander's power for himself. When Kane takes Connor's son, the two immortals meet for a final confrontation in the Scottish Highlands.
The film moves between feudal Japan, where Connor sought a master of magic, and the present day, where archaeologist Alex Johnson, played by Deborah Kara Unger, becomes drawn into the conflict. Directed by Andrew Morahan, it was his second feature after a 1992 concert film and before Goal III: Taking on the World in 2009, with a screenplay credited to Brad Mirman, René Manzor and Paul Ohl. The cast also includes Mako as Nakano and Martin Neufeld as Lt. John Stenn.
Released in 1994, the film had a budget of about 30 million dollars and took roughly 37 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 10 from around 23,000 votes, and on TMDB a 4.7 from 568 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 from 20 reviews is lower than both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene where Connor trains with a sword in the desert had to be reshot after sand got into the camera mechanism and damaged the film.
- During filming in Montreal, two local punks with mohawks were hired for one of the scenes. They agreed to appear for a small fee, which they were paid before filming began. Both had to be let go after someone noticed they were using drugs on set and plotting to take Mario Van Peebles hostage.
