Kidnapped

Set in 1858 Bologna, Italy, this historical drama follows the story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy who is forcibly removed from his home by papal soldiers. Because the child was secretly baptized as an infant, church law dictates he must be raised in the Catholic faith. The struggle of his parents to recover their son evolves into a wider political conflict, pitting the papacy against the international Jewish community and proponents of Italian unification and democracy.

The film was directed by Marco Bellocchio, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Susanna Nicchiarelli. Within his career, this project follows his previous work including The Traitor and Dormant Beauty. The cast features Enea Sala and Leonardo Maltese as Edgardo Mortara at different ages, along with Paolo Pierobon, Fausto Russo Alesi, Barbara Ronchi, and Andrea Gherpelli.
