Short description

Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo remain determined to get back to the Central Park Zoo in New York. After their time in Africa, they head for Europe, following the penguins and chimpanzees who have cleaned out a casino in Monte Carlo. Their arrival draws the attention of Chantel DuBois, a French animal-control officer who takes their escape personally, and the group takes shelter with a travelling circus, where they have to fit in with the resident performers and put together an act.

The film is directed by Conrad Vernon, Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath. It is the third entry in the Madagascar series, following the 2005 original and 2008's Escape 2 Africa, and it came after Vernon's Monsters vs Aliens and McGrath's Megamind, while Darnell's next directing credit was Penguins of Madagascar. Noah Baumbach and Darnell wrote the screenplay, and Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith return as the four leads, with Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer among the supporting voice cast.

Made for a budget of about 145 million US dollars, the film took roughly 747 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a DreamWorks Animation release. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from around 216,000 votes and on TMDB 6.7/10 from about 6,700 votes; a critics' rating of 6.7/10 from 132 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than apart from them.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When King Julien wants to turn off the lights early, the switch is in the upper position (the light will turn off when he lowers it). Minutes later, when an inexplicable situation with the lights occurs, Mort is at the switch, but the positions for on/off have been reversed (the light will turn off when he raises it).
  • Captain Chantel Dubois sings “Non, je ne regrette rien” to her henchmen for a minute. This is a French song that became famous after being recorded by Édith Piaf in 1960. Piaf dedicated the recording of this song to the French Foreign Legion volunteers, who still sing it at parades. Based on the men's reaction to the song, it is suggested that they all serve or have served in this unit.
  • When Captain Chantel Dubois prints information from her search, a voiceover character states they can hear a laser printer starting up. A inkjet printer is shown, but the sound used for it is taken from a dot matrix printer.
  • The ship's name in the final scenes of the film is “Mal De Mer,” which translates from French as “seasickness.”
