Married Life is a crime drama set in the late 1940s, chiefly in San Francisco. Harry Allen is a prosperous, mild-mannered businessman who has grown restless in his long marriage to Pat. He has fallen for Kay, a much younger woman, but he cannot bring himself to divorce Pat, believing the social humiliation of a separation would be more than she deserves. Instead he settles on a different solution: to end the marriage by killing his wife. Around him, others are pursuing their own desires. Harry's close friend Richard Langley also has designs on Kay, while the people in Harry's circle scheme and hesitate over their own hidden passions, and Harry's attempts to carry out his plan prove anything but smooth.
The film was directed by Ira Sachs, who wrote the screenplay with Oren Moverman. Its large credited cast of twenty-seven is led by Chris Cooper as Harry, Patricia Clarkson as Pat, Rachel McAdams as Kay and Pierce Brosnan as Richard, with David Wenham and Annabel Kershaw also appearing. It was produced by Sidney Kimmel, Jawal Nga and Steve Golin for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Anonymous Content and Firm Films, and runs 90 minutes.
Made for a budget of 12 million US dollars, Married Life took about 3 million dollars worldwide, a small return on its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 117 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 179 votes, so critics and audiences have judged it similarly. It stands first among the six features Sachs has directed, ahead of Love Is Strange and Little Men.
