Short description

Stay follows Sam Foster, a New York psychiatrist who takes over the case of Henry Letham, an art student, from a colleague who has fallen ill. Henry insists he intends to take his own life at midnight on his twenty-first birthday, and he makes claims about his past that do not hold up to inspection. Determined to prevent the death, Sam looks into Henry's history and the people around him, a search that unsettles his own life and his relationship with his girlfriend Lila, a painter and a former patient of his. As the contradictions multiply, Sam's hold on what is real begins to slip.

Marc Forster directed the film, his third feature, arriving between Finding Neverland and Stranger Than Fiction. David Benioff wrote the screenplay, and Arnon Milchan, Tom Lassally and Eric Kopeloff produced. Ewan McGregor plays Sam, Naomi Watts plays Lila, and Ryan Gosling plays Henry, with Kate Burton, Elizabeth Reaser and Bob Hoskins among the supporting cast.

Released in 2005, the film had a budget of about 50 million dollars and returned roughly 8 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.9 from 119 reviews, while on TMDB audiences rate it 6.6 from 1,591 votes, a gap that suggests viewers were more receptive than reviewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • This is David Benioff's first screenplay. It was sold for $1.5 million.
  • Many background actors are shown in the distance twice or even three times. It is visible that they are wearing the same clothes and carrying identical items.
  • The artist Tristan Rêveur, repeatedly mentioned in the film, is a fictional character.
