Suspect Zero is a crime thriller about an FBI agent, Thomas Mackelway, who is transferred to a bureau office in New Mexico. When a travelling salesman is found murdered near the state line, Mackelway is drawn into a case marked by strange symbols and a faxed message pointing him toward old missing-person reports. As he works the investigation with his colleague Fran Kulok, the killings appear to be the work of a serial predator, though the victims themselves are not ordinary people. The case pulls Mackelway into a psychological maze that also raises questions about someone inside the investigation.
The film was directed by E. Elias Merhige, his third feature after Begotten and Shadow of the Vampire, from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Billy Ray. Aaron Eckhart plays Mackelway, with Ben Kingsley as Benjamin O'Ryan, Carrie-Anne Moss as Fran Kulok, Harry Lennix, Kevin Chamberlin and Julian Reyes among the credited cast of 45. Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner produced through Cruise/Wagner Productions alongside Lakeshore Entertainment and Intermedia.
Made for a budget of 27 million US dollars, the film took about 13 million US dollars worldwide, a disappointing return. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.6 from roughly 412 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 from 126 reviews places it below its already modest audience scores.
