Rise of the Guardians
Short description
Rise of the Guardians follows a group of immortal figures who watch over the beliefs and imagination of children: North, Bunny, Tooth and the Sandman. Their purpose is threatened when Pitch, a spirit of fear, sets out to fill children's minds with nightmares and take control. Unable to stop him alone, the Guardians seek out Jack Frost, a carefree loner who has yet to understand his own powers or his place among them. The Moon chose these protectors long ago, and Jack's role in their struggle forces him to confront his past.
The film was directed by Peter Ramsey, his second feature after Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space and the one preceding Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in his filmography. David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay, and Christina Steinberg and Nancy Bernstein produced it for DreamWorks Animation, Paramount and Reel FX Creative Studios. The voice cast includes Chris Pine as Jack Frost, Alec Baldwin as North, Jude Law as Pitch, Isla Fisher as Tooth, Hugh Jackman as Bunny and Dakota Goyo as Jamie Bennett, with 21 credited cast members and 284 credited crew.
Released in November 2012, the 97-minute animated adventure cost about 145 million dollars and earned roughly 307 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2/10 from around 208,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4/10 from about 7,300 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 161 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The Easter Bunny warns: "Don't even dream of outrunning the bunny." This is a joke referencing Aesop's fable of the tortoise and the hare, in which the tortoise wins.
- The animators who created the Jack character state that he is 18 years old in the film. The actor who voiced him (Chris Pine) was 32 when he recorded his lines.
- The Easter Bunny opens a rabbit hole in the ground and jumps inside. This is a reference to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", where the rabbit hole leads to another dimension.
- In the workshop, during the opening, Severianin listens to and hums along to Igor Stravinsky's suite "The Firebird".
- The animated film is dedicated to the memory of Mary Katherine Joyce, the daughter of the original book's author and producer William Joyce, who died in 2010 from complications related to brain cancer. The fairy tales and stories that William told his daughter served as the basis for the book.
- Christopher Lee, Dwayne Johnson, Natalie Portman, Hugh Laurie, and Ian McShane were considered for voicing various roles in the film.
- The Tooth Fairy in the film is a combination of a human and a hummingbird.
- The latest film from DreamWorks Animation, distributed by Paramount.
- Leonardo DiCaprio was initially intended to voice Jack Frost, but he left the project during pre-production.
