Short description
To Rome with Love is an ensemble comedy set in the Italian capital, where several separate stories unfold at once. A retired American opera director visiting Rome discovers a funeral parlour employee with a remarkable singing voice and sees a chance to revive his own stalled career. A young American architecture student living in the city with his girlfriend finds their relationship unsettled by the arrival of her friend from home, while an older, successful architect who knew him offers warnings drawn from his own past. An ordinary Roman office worker wakes one morning to find himself famous for no clear reason, hounded by reporters and photographers. A newly married couple from the provinces, in Rome to meet relatives, are separated by the crowds and each drifts into a romantic encounter.
Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, his fortieth of forty-eight features in chronological order, following Midnight in Paris and preceding Blue Jasmine. The large cast includes Allen himself as Jerry, Roberto Benigni as Leopoldo, Penélope Cruz as Anna, Alec Baldwin as John, Judy Davis as Phyllis and Jesse Eisenberg as Jack, among eighty credited performers.
Made for a modest 17 million dollars, the film took about 73 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. The critical reception was mixed, at 5.5 out of 10 from 177 reviews, and audiences responded similarly, with 6.3 on IMDb and 5.8 on TMDB.

- At the beginning of the film, Roberto Benigni is portrayed as a typical middle-class Roman, but throughout the film he speaks with a Florentine accent, which is markedly different from the Roman one.
- When Leopoldo and his wife are walking down the street near the coffee shop, the same extras pass by in the background several times.
- When Leopoldo leaves the house and goes to work, he approaches his car with its front wheels turned to the right. He parks the car at home, and when he returns, the wheels are turned to the left.
- When Antonio calls Millie, the ringtone in the receiver is American. In Italy, this tone is different.
- Before the scene with Jerry and Phyllis on the plane, just before landing in Rome, there is a shot showing the plane from the outside. It reveals that they are flying on an Alitalia Livery Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This airline does not operate aircraft of this model.
- Initially, the film was titled The Bop Decameron, before being changed to Nero Fiddle. Woody Allen altered it when he realized few would notice the connection to a collection of novellas called “The Decameron.”
