Short description
Around 1900, a young writer named Christian arrives in Paris and is drawn into the bohemian world of Montmartre, where the painter Toulouse-Lautrec recruits him to write a show for the Moulin Rouge, the city's most extravagant cabaret. There he falls for Satine, the club's star courtesan, who dreams of becoming a real actress. A wealthy duke also wants her, and the club's future depends on his money, so the two lovers must hide what is growing between them.
Baz Luhrmann directed and co-wrote the film with Craig Pearce, following Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet, and produced it with Catherine Martin and Steve E. Andrews. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman lead a cast that includes John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent and Richard Roxburgh, with 139 credited cast members and 74 credited crew. The film sets its story to contemporary pop songs rather than period music.
Made for about 53 million US dollars, it took roughly 179 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from around 313,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from about 4,951 votes. A critics' rating stands at 7.5 out of 10 from 260 reviews, placing professional and audience assessments in close agreement.

- Originally, Heath Ledger and Catherine Zeta-Jones were supposed to play the main roles.
