The Spirit
Short description
The Spirit follows Denny Colt, a police officer in Central City who is killed in the line of duty and comes back from the dead. Reborn as the masked vigilante known as The Spirit, he devotes himself to protecting his city and hunting down its criminals. His main target is the Octopus, a brilliant and psychotic megalomaniac who is determined to destroy Central City and pursue his own obsession with immortality. In between, the Spirit encounters a series of women whose intentions toward him range from seduction to murder, among them the jewel thief Sand Saref, the skilled assistant Silken Floss and the doctor Ellen Dolan.
The film was directed and written by Frank Miller, following his earlier Sin City and preceding Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. It is based on Will Eisner's comic strip of the same name. Gabriel Macht plays the title role, with Eva Mendes, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Sarah Paulson and Dan Lauria rounding out the cast. Michael Uslan, Gigi Pritzker and Deborah Del Prete produced.
Released in December 2008, the film had a budget of 60 million dollars and took in around 39 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.7 from roughly 64,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.8 from about 1,098 votes. A critics' rating of 3.6 from 114 reviews sits in the same low range as the audience scores.

- In the comic, Danny Colt wears a blue suit. In the film, the color of the main character’s costume was decided to be classic black.
- This is the full directorial debut of the famous comic book artist Frank Miller.
- The rights to adapt the story were purchased by producer Michael E. Uslan back in the 90s, but the project never received the green light. In 2004, OddLot Entertainment gained the opportunity to bring the comic to the big screen, and work on the film finally began.
- Will Eisner's novella is set in the 1940s and 50s, but the film moves the events to a later time.
- "The Spirit" is an adaptation of the popular comic book series by Will Eisner, which was published from 1942 to 1950.
- The first attempt to adapt "The Spirit" for the screen was made in the mid-80s. Sam J. Jones played the lead role in the pilot episode, after which the project was cancelled.
- After the release of "Sin City" and "300," it was decided to make "The Spirit" using the same technology. The stylistic elements and some visual effects were also borrowed from "Sin City."
- The name of Scarlett Johansson's character – Silken Floss – translates as "Silk Thread."
