Howards End

Howards End is a drama set in early twentieth-century England, where the lives of three families from different social backgrounds become entangled through their connection to a country house. Margaret Schlegel and her sister Helen, educated and independent-minded, encounter the wealthy, conventional Wilcox family. Margaret forms a close friendship with Ruth Wilcox, while the two households remain divided by class and outlook. Their circle also touches the struggling clerk Leonard Bast and his companion Jacky, who stand far below both families in status and security. The house itself, Howards End, becomes the point where these separate worlds meet.

James Ivory directed the film, working from a screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and producing alongside Ismail Merchant. It sits between A Room with a View and Maurice and The Remains of the Day in Ivory's filmography, with A Room with a View preceding it and The Remains of the Day following.
