Short description
Lee is a biographical drama about Elizabeth "Lee" Miller, an American woman who first found fame as a fashion model before turning to photography. Restless in the shadow of the male artists around her, she travels to Europe during the Second World War and reports from the front as a correspondent for Vogue, working alongside the photographer David E. Scherman. Their assignments take them through France and into territory where the scale of the war's atrocities becomes impossible to ignore, and what Miller records there shapes both her reputation and the rest of her life.
The film is directed by Ellen Kuras, a longtime cinematographer making her narrative feature debut, from a screenplay written by Marion Hume, John Collee and Liz Hannah. Kate Winslet, who also produced, plays Miller, with Andy Samberg as Scherman, Alexander Skarsgård as Roland Penrose, Marion Cotillard as Solange D'Ayen, Andrea Riseborough as Audrey Withers and Noémie Merlant as Nusch Eluard. It runs 117 minutes and was made across Australia, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg and the United States.
Released in September 2024, the film took in roughly 24 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from about 34,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7 out of 10 from far fewer voters. A critics' score of 6.4 from 154 reviews places it below the audience figures on both sites.

- On the first day of filming, Kate Winslet was rehearsing a scene where Lee Miller runs down the street during a bombing raid in 1944, but she slipped, fell, and hit her back badly. The actress decided not to stop filming. Throughout the week, she returned to the set despite three large bruises on her back and her own difficulty standing.
- It took eight years to make the film, and at one point, due to unstable funding, Kate Winslet (who also produced the film) paid the salaries of the entire cast and crew for two weeks.
- Kate Winslet had previously worked with Ellen Kuras on Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) and Alan Rickman's "A Little Chaos" (2014), with Kuras serving as cinematographer on both projects. Winslet and Kuras discussed wanting to collaborate again, and finally found an opportunity with this film. Kuras was browsing a bookstore in New York when she came across a book about Lee Miller. She noticed the resemblance between Miller and Kate Winslet, kept one copy for herself, and sent the other to Winslet. Several years later, Winslet purchased a desk that once belonged to Miller, reread the book, and began considering a film about Lee Miller, then approached Kuras to ask if she would be interested in directing it.
