Short description
The story of photographer Elizabeth 'Lee' Miller, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kate Winslet had previously worked with Ellen Kuras on Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) and Alan Rickman's "A Little Chaos" (2014), with Kuras serving as cinematographer on both projects. Winslet and Kuras discussed wanting to collaborate again, and finally found an opportunity with this film. Kuras was browsing a bookstore in New York when she came across a book about Lee Miller. She noticed the resemblance between Miller and Kate Winslet, kept one copy for herself, and sent the other to Winslet. Several years later, Winslet purchased a desk that once belonged to Miller, reread the book, and began considering a film about Lee Miller, then approached Kuras to ask if she would be interested in directing it.
- The filmmakers had unlimited access to the Lee Miller archives and worked closely with the Miller family.
- On the first day of filming, Kate Winslet was rehearsing a scene where Lee Miller runs down the street during a bombing raid in 1944, but she slipped, fell, and hit her back badly. The actress decided not to stop filming. Throughout the week, she returned to the set despite three large bruises on her back and her own difficulty standing.
- The film features several photographs. These are shots of Kate Winslet as Lee Miller.
- It took eight years to make the film, and at one point, due to unstable funding, Kate Winslet (who also produced the film) paid the salaries of the entire cast and crew for two weeks.
