Set on an island off the New England coast in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom follows two twelve-year-olds who fall for each other and run away together. Sam is a scout and an orphan whose foster parents no longer want him; Suzy is a restless girl absorbed in fantasies and at odds with her parents. Their disappearance draws in the island's adults: the local sheriff, the scoutmaster and his troop of boys, and Suzy's mother and father. A social services officer takes an interest in Sam's case, and a heavy storm approaches the coast while the search goes on.
Wes Anderson directed and wrote the screenplay with Roman Coppola, and the film is the ninth of the twenty-six features he has directed, coming after Fantastic Mr. Fox and before Castello Cavalcanti. Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play the two young leads, with Bruce Willis as Captain Sharp, Edward Norton as Scout Master Ward, and Bill Murray and Frances McDormand as Suzy's parents. Scott Rudin, Anderson and Jeremy Dawson produced.
Made for about 16 million dollars, the film took roughly 68 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from around 382,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 out of 10 from a much smaller body of voters. A critics' rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 270 reviews places it above both audience scores.
