When Night Is Falling

Camille teaches at a Protestant college in Toronto and is engaged to Martin, a minister and fellow lecturer at the same institution. Their superiors expect the couple to marry, and Camille is not sure she is ready. The death of her dog leaves her adrift, and it is while she is still grieving that she meets Petra, an acrobat with a travelling circus. Petra is confident and uninhibited where Camille is reserved, and Camille finds herself drawn to her. What begins as an unexpected attraction pushes her to reconsider the faith, relationship and future she had settled into, and to weigh the life she knows against the one Petra offers.

Patricia Rozema wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Barbara Tranter for Alliance Films and runs 96 minutes. It is the first of the five features Rozema has directed, ahead of Mansfield Park, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Into the Forest and Mouthpiece. Pascale Bussières plays Camille, Rachael Crawford plays Petra, and Henry Czerny plays Martin, with David Fox, Don McKellar and Tracy Wright in supporting roles.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 from around 7,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from roughly 95 votes, indicating a modest but settled reputation and a limited following on the latter platform.
