Short description
Till is a historical drama about Mamie Till-Mobley, a widowed mother raising her son Emmett in Chicago, where she works for the Air Force. In 1955 the fourteen-year-old travels to Mississippi to stay with relatives. After an encounter with a white woman, he is abducted and killed. When his body is recovered, Mamie insists on a public funeral with an open casket and allows photographs of her son's injuries to be published, turning a private loss into a national reckoning. The men accused of the killing are acquitted, and she channels her grief into campaigning for civil rights.
Chinonye Chukwu directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Keith Beauchamp and Michael Reilly; Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Broccoli and Frederick Zollo produced. Danielle Deadwyler plays Mamie, with Jalyn Hall as Emmett, Frankie Faison as John Carthan, Haley Bennett as Carolyn Bryant, John Douglas Thompson as Moses Wright and Whoopi Goldberg as Alma.
The film was released in October 2022 and runs 131 minutes. Made for about 33 million dollars, it took roughly 11 million worldwide. It rates 7.2 on IMDb from 18,000 votes and 7.3 on TMDB from 370 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.9 from 196 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Simeon Wright, Till's cousin, who witnessed everything that happened to him firsthand, worked as a film consultant until his death in 2017. The film's screenplay was written by director Chinonye Chukwu in collaboration with producers Michael Reilly and Keith Boshan.
- The film by "Orion Pictures" used the results of 27 years of research conducted by Keith Beauchamp, whose efforts culminated in 2004 with the reopening of the case of the murder of Emmett Till (1941-1955).
