Dangerous Beauty
Short description
Set in sixteenth-century Venice, Dangerous Beauty centres on Veronica Franco, a young woman of intelligence and charm who falls for the aristocrat Marco Venier. Marriage between them is impossible because she has no dowry and her family background is considered unsuitable. Urged on by her mother Paola, a former courtesan herself, Veronica enters the world of the city's courtesans, where women of her position can command wealth, learning and influence among the men who run the Republic. Her rise brings her admiration as well as enemies, among them the poet Maffio Venier, and she must use her wit to hold on to control of her own life.
Marshall Herskovitz directed the film, from a screenplay by Jeannine Dominy, with Arnon Milchan, Edward Zwick and Herskovitz producing. Catherine McCormack plays Veronica, opposite Rufus Sewell as Marco, with Oliver Platt, Fred Ward, Naomi Watts and Jacqueline Bisset in supporting roles. It was released in February 1998 and took in roughly 5 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from more than twenty thousand votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7 from around three hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 from twenty-nine reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a modest but fairly consistent reception.
