Short description

Modesto is a teacher who can see the dead, a gift that has cost him a fortune in psychiatric care and every job he has ever held. His luck appears to turn when he is hired at Monforte, a prestigious school where five students need to complete their final year. The complication is that the five died in a fire two decades earlier and have been haunting the premises since. The school's headmistress sees the new arrival as her best hope of finally being rid of them, and Modesto sets out to get the group through their studies so they can move on.

Ghost Graduation is a Spanish comedy fantasy directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera, his first feature and the earliest title in the directing filmography listed here, ahead of Superlopez, Valley of the Dead, A Man of Action, Wolfgang and 5 More Minutes. The screenplay is by Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor. Raúl Arévalo plays Modesto, with Alexandra Jiménez as Tina, Aura Garrido as Elsa, Andrea Duro as Mariví, Àlex Maruny as Dani and Jaime Olías as Jorge. It runs 88 minutes and was released in February 2012.

The film took about 1 million dollars at the worldwide box office, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 out of 10 from 226 votes. Both audience scores place it in mildly positive territory, with the smaller TMDB sample landing slightly higher.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The drunken teenager played by Javier Bodalo is named Pinflói. In the 1980s in Spain, this was a slang term formed from the name of the band Pink Floyd and used to refer to someone who has very little idea of what is happening around them.
