Chattahoochee

Chattahoochee is a drama set in 1950s Florida. Emmett Foley, a Korean War veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life, stages an armed incident at his home in the hope that police will shoot him, so that his wife and child can collect on his life insurance. He survives and is committed to the Chattahoochee state mental hospital, where he finds patients subjected to humiliation and brutality at the hands of the staff. As he works toward his own recovery, with the support of his wife and a fellow patient, Walker Benson, he turns his anger against the institution's administration.

The film was directed by Mick Jackson, the third of the nine features listed in his filmography, following Threads and arriving before L.A. Story and The Bodyguard. James Cresson wrote the screenplay, and Aaron and Faye Schwab produced. Gary Oldman plays Emmett Foley, with Dennis Hopper as Walker Benson, Frances McDormand as Mae Foley, Pamela Reed, Matt Craven and William De Acutis in supporting roles. It runs 98 minutes and was released on April 20, 1990.

Reception has been mixed. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from around 2,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from a much smaller base of 49 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 across 11 reviews places it below the audience scores.
