Peter and Lorna are a young couple who set out to make a documentary exposing a cult gaining followers in the San Fernando Valley. The group is led by Maggie, a young woman who says she has travelled back from the future and promises her followers a safe place to survive terrible events that are coming. Convinced she is a fraud, the pair join the cult under assumed identities to investigate it from the inside, filming as they go. Over time, Maggie's story becomes harder for them to dismiss.
The film stars Brit Marling as Maggie, Christopher Denham as Peter and Nicole Vicius as Lorna, with Davenia McFadden, Kandice Stroh and Richard Wharton among a credited cast of 23. Zal Batmanglij directed from a screenplay he wrote with Marling, and Marling produced alongside Hans Ritter and Shelley Surpin for Skyscraper Films. It was Batmanglij's first feature, followed by The East in 2013, and it runs 85 minutes.
Audiences received it moderately: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 440 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10, drawn from 109 reviews, places reviewers somewhat higher than the general audience. The small vote totals on TMDB suggest the film reached a narrower viewership than its IMDb tally indicates.
