The Phantom of the Opera

A young American singer named Christine Day comes across a fragment of an unfinished opera by a long-dead composer, Erik Destler. When she performs the music at an audition, she is knocked unconscious and wakes up in Victorian London, where she becomes the focus of Destler's obsessive attention. Badly disfigured, he wears a mask and hides himself away, and he is determined to turn Christine into an opera star, removing anyone who stands in the way of her career.

The film was directed by Dwight H. Little and written by Duke Sandefur, with Menahem Golan and Harry Alan Towers producing. It came third in Little's filmography, following Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Bloodstone, both from 1988, and ahead of Marked for Death. Robert Englund plays Destler and the Phantom, with Jill Schoelen as Christine, Alex Hyde-White as Richard Dutton, Bill Nighy as Martin Barton, Stephanie Lawrence as La Carlotta and Terence Harvey as Inspector Hawkins.

Released in November 1989, the 93-minute horror romance is a loose adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel, updated with a modern-day frame. It grossed around 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 4,900 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from about 133 votes, while a critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 12 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
