Smoking Causes Coughing

Five costumed crime fighters known as the Tobacco Force use the harmful substances in cigarettes as their weapons. After a punishing encounter with a demonic turtle, their leader orders them to take a mandatory retreat so the group can repair its fraying bonds. Their stay goes well until Lézardin, Emperor of Evil, sets out to destroy the Earth.

Quentin Dupieux directed and wrote the film, the tenth of the sixteen features he has made in chronological order, arriving between Incredible But True in 2022 and Yannick in 2023. Gilles Lellouche, Vincent Lacoste, Anaïs Demoustier, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Oulaya Amamra play the five heroes, with Alain Chabat voicing Chef Didier. Hugo Sélignac produced, and the credited cast and crew number 32 and 55 respectively. It is a French production in the comedy, fantasy and science fiction genres, running 77 minutes.

Released in late November 2022, the film had a budget of about 6 million dollars and took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide, a wide gap between its cost and its theatrical returns. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 6,400 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from 426 votes, placing audience response in moderate territory. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 84 reviews is noticeably higher than those viewer scores, suggesting reviewers responded more favorably than general audiences did.
