Darling Companion

Beth saves a stray dog she finds near a highway on a winter day and takes it home, despite the reservations of her husband Joseph. With Joseph often away and Beth spending long stretches on her own, the bond between her and the animal grows into the central comfort of her life. That bond is broken when Joseph loses the dog during a wedding at the couple's second home in the Rocky Mountains. Devastated, Beth presses the guests still present to join the search, and the hunt spreads out in directions none of them expected.

Lawrence Kasdan directed from a screenplay he wrote with Meg Kasdan, and the film sits eleventh among the twelve features he has directed, between Dreamcatcher and Marty, Life Is Short. Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline lead as Beth and Joseph, with Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass among the twenty credited cast members. Anthony Bregman, Elizabeth Redleaf and Kasdan produced.

The film drew a critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 90 reviews, while audiences were somewhat kinder: on IMDb it holds 5.2 from around 4,100 votes, and on TMDB 5 out of 10 from roughly 100 votes. Both sit in mixed territory, with viewers slightly more receptive than reviewers.
