Tokyo!

Tokyo! is an anthology film made of three separate stories, all set in the Japanese capital and each directed by a different filmmaker from outside Japan. Michel Gondry's segment follows a young couple who move to the city, where the woman undergoes a strange transformation. Leos Carax introduces Merde, a bizarre figure who emerges from the sewers and causes chaos in the streets before facing trial. Bong Joon-ho's story centres on a man who has withdrawn from the world for years until an encounter with a pizza delivery girl changes his routine.

Gondry, Carax and Bong each directed and co-wrote their own chapter, with Ayako Fujitani and Ryo Kase leading the first, Denis Lavant and Jean-François Balmer the second, and Teruyuki Kagawa and Yu Aoi the third. The film sits between Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet in Gondry's filmography, between The Host and Mother for Bong, and between Pola X and Holy Motors for Carax.

Released in 2008, the film took about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from roughly 275 votes, suggesting a modest but appreciative audience. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 66 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
