Short description
Ethan Learner is a college professor whose young son Josh is killed by a hit-and-run driver while the family is returning home from a concert. Ethan becomes consumed with finding the person responsible, a search that pulls him away from his grieving wife Grace and their daughter Emma. The driver, Dwight Arno, is a lawyer who was on his way home from a baseball game with his own son. He is haunted by guilt but does not come forward, fearing he will lose contact with his boy. The two men's paths cross again when Ethan seeks legal help and Dwight is assigned to handle his case, without either realizing at first who the other is.
Terry George directed and co-wrote the film with John Burnham Schwartz, working from Schwartz's novel. It was George's second feature as director, following Hotel Rwanda three years earlier. Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo play Ethan and Dwight, with Jennifer Connelly as Grace, Mira Sorvino as Ruth Wheldon, and Elle Fanning and Sean Curley as the two children.
The film was released in September 2007 and took in about 2 million dollars worldwide against a production mounted across Germany and the United States. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from 112 reviews, while on TMDB its audience score is 6.5 from 423 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel of the same name (1998) by Jonathan Burnham Schwartz. The screenplay was written by Schwartz and director Terry George.
- Mark Ruffalo was initially cast in M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi thriller Signs (2002), but he left the project after a brain tumor was discovered. The tumor turned out to be benign, but it took Ruffalo nearly a year to recover, and as a result, he lost hearing in his left ear. Meanwhile, work on Signs continued, and Joaquin Phoenix took the role instead of Ruffalo.
