Diana Nyad is a distance swimmer approaching her sixtieth birthday when she decides to attempt a crossing of the open water between Cuba and Florida, a journey of more than 160 kilometres. She had tried and failed decades earlier, and the challenge now is as much about endurance, navigation and weather as it is about swimming. Her friend Bonnie Stoll agrees to help, and together with a small crew they plan an attempt that most people around them consider out of reach.
NYAD is a drama directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, their fourth feature after Free Solo, The Rescue and Return to Space in that same year. Julia Cox wrote the screenplay, and Andrew Lazar and Teddy Schwarzman produced. Annette Bening plays Diana Nyad, with Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll and Rhys Ifans as John Bartlett, the boat's navigator. The production involved 45 credited cast members and 257 credited crew, and was made between the United States and Switzerland.
The film was released in October 2023 and runs two hours. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 from a much smaller number of votes, so the two audiences broadly agree. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 across 166 reviews places professional response in much the same range as the general audience.
