A Buddhist monk and his student, Fong, travel through a small town to deliver a golden statue of Buddha. After facing harassment from local thieves, they seek shelter for the night at the Orchid Temple. While the senior monk attempts to fight off the supernatural entities inhabiting the area, Fong becomes involved with a ghost named Lotus. This attraction leads to a conflict involving the spirits of the forest and those seeking to hunt them.
Directed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung, this fantasy action comedy is the fourth of 13 films in the director's career. It follows A Chinese Ghost Story II and precedes The Legend of the Swordsman. The film features a cast including Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Jacky Cheung, Joey Wong, Nina Li Chi, Lau Siu-Ming, and Shun Lau. Produced in Hong Kong by Film Workshop and Golden Princess Film Production Limited, the screenplay was written by Tsui Hark and Roy Szeto Wai-Cheuk.
