Society of the Snow dramatizes the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which went down over the Andes on October 13, 1972 while carrying a rugby team and other passengers to Chile. Stranded on a glacier in one of the world's most isolated places, the survivors must find a way to endure the extreme cold, injuries and hunger while holding together as a group. Their struggle to stay alive and to find a way out of the mountains forms the core of the story.
J. A. Bayona directed and co-wrote the film with Bernat Vilaplana and Jaime Marques, and produced it with Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida. It is the sixth feature Bayona directed, arriving between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018 and this 2023 release. The cast, 110 credited performers in all, includes Enzo Vogrincic as Numa Turcatti, Agustín Pardella as Fernando Parrado, Matías Recalt as Roberto Canessa, Esteban Bigliardi, Diego Vegezzi and Fernando Contigiani García. The 132-strong crew supported a production reported at a substantial budget.
The film runs 143 minutes and was released in December 2023. On IMDb it holds a 7.8 rating from about 172,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 8 from over 3,600 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.9 from 160 reviews places critical and audience responses closely in line with each other, indicating a broadly well-received film on both sides.
