Medicine Man
Short description
Dr. Robert Campbell, a Scottish researcher, has spent years living in the Amazon rainforest while searching for a cure for cancer. When the pharmaceutical company funding his work sends biochemist Rae Crane to check on his progress, Campbell, who had asked for a male assistant, greets her with disdain. The two gradually move from friction toward cooperation and affection as they pursue the same goal. Their work is threatened by developers who want to clear the forest where the possible treatment is found.
John McTiernan directed the film, his fifth feature after Nomads, Predator, Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October. Tom Schulman and Sally Robinson wrote the screenplay, and Andrew G. Vajna and Donna Dubrow produced it for Hollywood Pictures and Cinergi Pictures Entertainment. Sean Connery plays Campbell and Lorraine Bracco plays Crane, with José Wilker, Rodolfo De Alexandre, Francisco Tsiren Tsere Rereme and Elias Monteiro Da Silva in supporting roles. The film runs 106 minutes.
Released in February 1992, Medicine Man had a budget of 40 million dollars and took in 46 million dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 26,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from over 400 votes, while critics gave it 4.2 out of 10 across 23 reviews, a notably lower figure than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director John McTiernan initially wanted to film “The Physician” in the evergreen tropical forests of Borneo, where he had shot the science fiction action film “Predator” five years earlier. However, after a reconnaissance expedition, he saw that everything had changed. The tropical forests were being destroyed and the previous locations were gone. This was a stark example of what the film “The Physician” depicted. McTiernan had to film in the remaining jungles in Mexico, importing Brazilian Indians for the shoot.
- Sean Connery’s hairstyle in this film exactly replicated the hairstyle of composer Jerry Goldsmith. Connery and the filmmakers felt that such a ponytail was very suitable for the image of Robert Campbell.
