Empress Elisabeth of Austria recruits Countess Irma as a lady-in-waiting after a rigorous selection process. The two women develop a close bond while staying at a summer residence on Corfu, where the Empress lives away from the strict etiquette of the Viennese court. As they travel together and share a growing affection, their unconventional relationship creates tension with the established social conventions of the monarchy. Despite their attempts to resist the pressures of the outside world, they eventually face a fatal conclusion.
