Starlet

Starlet follows Jane, a twenty-one-year-old aspiring actress living in California with her roommates Melissa and Mikey, whose days revolve around drugs and video games, with her chihuahua Starlet as her main responsibility. At a yard sale held by Sadie, an elderly widow who has withdrawn from the world and devotes herself to her garden, Jane buys an item and finds a substantial sum of money hidden inside it. This discovery draws the two women together, and an unlikely friendship slowly develops, complicated by the money Jane has kept and by Sadie's resistance to the younger woman's attention.

The film was directed by Sean Baker, who wrote it with Chris Bergoch, and it stands early in Baker's filmography, following Take Out and preceding Tangerine, The Florida Project, Red Rocket, Anora and Sandiwara. Dree Hemingway plays Jane and Besedka Johnson plays Sadie, with Stella Maeve, James Ransone and Karren Karagulian in supporting roles. It is a drama running 103 minutes, made in the United Kingdom and the United States.
