Short description
Set in Verona during the Early Renaissance, this adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy centers on two young people from families locked in a long and bitter feud. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet meet at a masked gathering at the Capulet estate and fall for each other at once, only to discover that their names make any open courtship impossible. They marry in secret, but the ongoing hostility between their households and Romeo's involvement in a fatal clash with Juliet's cousin Tybalt drive the lovers toward a tragic outcome.
Carlo Carlei directed the film, the third feature in his filmography after Fluke and Ferrari. Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, and the production was handled by Simon Bosanquet, Milena Canonero and Lawrence Elman. Hailee Steinfeld plays Juliet and Douglas Booth plays Romeo, with Damian Lewis and Natascha McElhone as Lord and Lady Capulet and Christian Cooke as Mercutio. The film runs 118 minutes and was made across the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States and Switzerland.
Released in September 2013, it took in about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from around 590 votes, a higher mark from a much smaller group of viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Logan Lerman, Sam Claflin, Josh Hutcherson, and Benny Safdie auditioned for the role of Romeo.
- An 18-year-old daughter of Olivia Hussey (who played Juliet in the 1968 film), India Eisley, was also invited to audition for the role of Juliet in the new adaptation, but she declined to audition.
- A significant portion of the film was shot during the cold season – in February and March, although according to Shakespeare, all events unfold in the height of summer – at the end of July.
- Many professional dancers were involved in the ball scene.

- The film was released in the year of Franco Zeffirelli's 90th birthday and the 45th anniversary of the release of his 1968 version of "Romeo and Juliet".
