Short description
While protecting an Amish boy—the sole witness to a brutal murder—and his mother, a detective is forced to seek refuge within their community when his own life comes under threat.

- The film's original title was "Called Home".
- 20th Century Fox refused to give the "rural film" project a green light, but the script interested Phil Gersh, Harrison Ford's agent. Funding was secured under that prominent name.
- Ford suggested Australian Peter Weir as the director, who had gained prominence with films about the survival of archaic cultures in the modern world. Although "Witness" touches on the same theme, Weir agreed to participate in the project only after filming of his film "The Mosquito Coast" fell through due to financial problems.
- In the film's most famous scene, a cover version of Sam Cooke's iconic melody "(What a) Wonderful World" performed by Greg Chapman is heard on the radio, not the original.
