Short description

Earthrealm defenders and martial arts champions unite to stop the dark reign of Shao Kahn, whose rule threatens the existence of their world. This conflict involves a brutal tournament where fighters, including Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs, must push their limits. They are joined by Johnny Cage and the princess Kitana, whose shifting loyalties complicate the struggle between allies and enemies.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, this is the second film he has led in the series following Mortal Kombat (2021). The screenplay was written by Jeremy Slater, and the production was handled by New Line Cinema alongside Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, and Domain Entertainment. The ensemble cast features Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Ludi Lin, Jessica McNamee, Martyn Ford, and Josh Lawson.

The movie had a budget of 80 million USD and earned 129 million USD at the worldwide box office, resulting in a modest profit. Audience reception is mixed but generally positive across platforms. On IMDb, the film holds a 6.4 rating based on 50 votes, while it has a higher score of 7.8 on TMDB from 2,603 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to one of the main cast members, Ludi Lin, there was a scene in the plot that initiated a romantic relationship between his character and the character played by Adeline Rudolph, but it was cut from the film during editing along with many other non-combat scenes.
  • The mention of the 'Arcana system' (a concept explaining the abilities of the Earthrealm champions) was left out of the movie, as it was deemed unnecessary.
  • In the fight scene with Karl Urban's character, Adeline Rudolph's character refuses to follow orders to finish off Johnny, after which he collapses onto the arena in exhaustion. This is a reference to the video games, where a player refuses to deliver the final blow to an opponent, causing them to collapse from exhaustion.
  • The credits for New Line Cinema, Domain Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and Broken Road Productions at the beginning of the film use the same font as the title of the computer game Mortal Kombat II.
  • According to screenwriter Jeremy Slater, the character played by Ana Thu Nguyen was included in the plot in place of another character who was decided against.
  • When Jessica McNamee's character (Sonya Blade) introduces the champions of Earthrealm to the character played by Karl Urban (who played Johnny Cage), she does not mention his name. Similarly, throughout the entire film, no one refers to her by name in his presence.
