Short description
Kyle Pratt is a recently widowed American engineer travelling home from Berlin with her six-year-old daughter, Julia. The girl disappears during the flight, and Kyle cannot find her anywhere on the aircraft. No one aboard remembers seeing Julia, and the passenger records do not support Kyle's account. Still grieving her husband's death, she struggles to convince the crew and the other passengers that she is of sound mind, while having to consider the possibility that she is mistaken.
Robert Schwentke directed the film, his second feature after The Family Jewels. Jodie Foster plays Kyle, with Peter Sarsgaard as Carson, the air marshal on board, and Erika Christensen, Kate Beahan, Greta Scacchi and Judith Scott among the credited cast. Billy Ray and Peter A. Dowling wrote the screenplay, and Brian Grazer produced it for Touchstone Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.
Released in September 2005, Flightplan runs 98 minutes and is classed as a drama, mystery and thriller. Made for a budget of 55 million US dollars, it went on to take around 223 million worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audience opinion is moderate rather than enthusiastic: it holds 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 185,000 votes and 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from around 3,000 votes. Critics were less positive still, averaging 5.5 out of 10 across 173 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sean Bean, who played the role of the airplane captain, is afraid of flying in real life and only flies in cases of absolute necessity.
- The main role was originally intended for a male character, to be played by Sean Penn. However, the male name Kyle remained unchanged and was transferred to the character played by Jodie Foster.
- The surname of the main character, Pratt, is an allusion to the Pratt & Whitney company, which manufactures aircraft engines for civil and military aviation. Throughout the film, Kylie mentions several times that she designed the engines for this aircraft.
- The cartoon playing on the monitor in the airplane when Kyle wakes up is one of the episodes of the animated series "Kenny the Shark" (2003-2006).
