A Man Called Otto
Short description
Otto Anderson is a widowed, irritable man living alone in Pittsburgh, where he keeps strict routines and polices his neighbourhood's rules, rubbing his neighbours the wrong way. When a young family moves in next door, his life is disrupted by Marisol, a sharp-witted and heavily pregnant woman, along with her husband Tommy and their two daughters. A friendship forms between Otto and the newcomers despite his initial resistance, gradually drawing him out of his isolation.
Marc Forster directed the film, the eleventh of thirteen features he has made, following Christopher Robin and preceding White Bird. David Magee wrote the screenplay, and Tom Hanks produced alongside Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman. Hanks plays Otto, with Mariana Treviño as Marisol, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Tommy, Cameron Britton as Jimmy, Mack Bayda as Malcolm and Juanita Jennings as Anita. It is an American and Swedish production and runs 126 minutes.
Released in late December 2022, the film cost about 50 million dollars and took roughly 113 million dollars worldwide, a solid return. Audiences rate it warmly: 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 208,000 votes and 7.7 out of 10 on TMDB, while the critics' rating stands lower at 6.2 out of 10.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one scene, Tom Hanks' face had to be digitally processed to 'rejuvenate' him and make him look about 35 years old. Footage and stills from Joe Dante's comedy thriller 'The 'Burbs' (1989) were used as a basis for this.
- In the film, they eat a pastry called "semla" in Swedish. This is a reference to the author of the original novel, although the pastry isn't mentioned there. Also, it's not something you’d easily find in Pittsburgh, where the film is set. In fact, in Sweden, "semla" is a seasonal food, mainly eaten between December and Easter, as it originates from the Christian tradition of treats before Lent.
