Picture Perfect

Kate is a talented employee at a New York advertising agency, but her career has stalled. Her boss favors staff who seem settled, and Kate, single and unattached, does not fit that image. To change how she is seen, she invents a fiancé named Nick, a man she met only once, at a friend's wedding, and backs up the story with a photograph. The pretense works better than she expected, bringing her both a promotion and the attention of a colleague she is drawn to, until Nick turns up in the newspapers and she has to produce the fiancé she made up.

Glenn Gordon Caron directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Arleen Sorkin and Paul Slansky. It was his third feature as director, following Clean and Sober in 1988 and Love Affair in 1994. Jennifer Aniston plays Kate, with Jay Mohr as Nick, Kevin Bacon as Sam, Olympia Dukakis as Rita, Illeana Douglas as Darcy and Kevin Dunn as Mr. Mercer.

The film was released in August 1997 and runs 105 minutes. It cost about 19 million dollars and took roughly 44 million dollars worldwide, a return that covers its production costs without suggesting a major hit. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from more than 21,000 votes. On TMDB its rating is 5.9 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, and the critics' score stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 43 reviews.
