Short description

A salvage tug, the Sea Star, is caught in a typhoon in the South Pacific and loses its cargo. With the ship damaged and the crew facing a heavy financial loss, they take shelter in calmer water and come across a large Russian research vessel that appears to be deserted. The captain sees a chance to claim a substantial reward by towing it to port. Once aboard, the crew finds that something has taken over the ship, and that the entity regards the humans as a threat to be eliminated.

The film was directed by John Bruno, a visual effects specialist, and was the second feature he directed, following Heavy Metal. Chuck Pfarrer and Dennis Feldman wrote the screenplay, and Gale Anne Hurd produced. Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland star, with Joanna Pacula, Marshall Bell and Sherman Augustus in supporting roles. The production was a large international effort involving studios in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan.

Made for about 75 million dollars, Virus returned roughly 31 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.4 from over 700 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Chuck Pfarrer explained in an interview that the comic was based on a screenplay he wrote in the early 90s. Due to the special effects required by the script, it was impossible to turn it into a film at the time, so he handed it over to Dark Horse Comics, which published it in 1995. Several years later, when special effects technology had become more advanced, Pfarrer reworked the original screenplay.
  • The decommissioned US Navy ship USS General Vandenberg 'served' as the Russian research vessel Akademik Vladislav Volkov. At the time of filming, the ship had been decommissioned since the mid-80s and was preserved in the James River reserve fleet in Virginia. On May 27, 2009, it was sunk near Key West, Florida, USA, to be used as an artificial reef and for recreational diving. Until its sinking in 2009 off the coast of Florida, Cyrillic inscriptions remained visible on its hull.
  • The 'Goliath' robot was approximately three meters tall and weighed about two tons. The special effects company hired to create Goliath had only three and a half months to build the robot.
  • The film's plot is based on the comic book series of the same name by Chuck Pfarrer, who is also a co-writer of the film's screenplay.
