Anastasia is an animated adventure set in a Russia shaken by revolution. The youngest daughter of the imperial family survives the fall of the Romanovs as a child but loses her memory in the chaos. Ten years later she lives as an orphan named Anya, with only faint recollections of a past she cannot place. Determined to find the grandmother she believes is still alive, she travels toward Paris. Two con men, Dimitri and Vladimir, take her under their wing and plan to pass her off as the missing Grand Duchess in exchange for a reward, though Dimitri has his own history with the girl he once helped save. Pursuing them is the sorcerer Rasputin, aided by his bat companion Bartok, who is bent on making sure the lost princess never reaches her destination.
The film was released in 1997 and directed by Gary Goldman and Don Bluth, who had previously worked together on Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park and The Pebble and the Penguin, and who would go on to make Bartok the Magnificent and Titan A.E. Its screenplay is credited to Susan Gauthier, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, with Goldman and Bluth producing alongside Laura Jo Wentworth. Meg Ryan voices Anya, with John Cusack as Dimitri, Kelsey Grammer as Vladimir, Christopher Lloyd as Rasputin, Hank Azaria as Bartok and Bernadette Peters as Sophie.
The production carried a budget of 53 million dollars and returned 140 million worldwide, a strong result for an animated feature of its period. Audiences rate it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb across 146,000 votes and 7.6 out of 10 on TMDB, while its critics' rating stands at 7.4 out of 10 from 58 reviews, indicating broad approval from both reviewers and the public.
