Short description
Michael Cromwell is a New York commodities broker preparing to marry his fiancée, Charlotte, which means finally settling his divorce from Patricia, his first wife, who has spent years living among indigenous people in the South American rainforest. He travels there to obtain her signature, only to learn that he has a thirteen-year-old son, Mimi-Siku, raised in a tribal village. Michael brings the boy back to New York, where Mimi-Siku's jungle skills and customs clash with city life, to the dismay of Michael's business partner Richard and the confusion of Charlotte. Michael must balance his ambitions with sudden fatherhood while Mimi-Siku adjusts to an unfamiliar world.
John Pasquin directed the film, his second feature after The Santa Clause and the second of four films he directed. Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon wrote the screenplay, and Brian Reilly produced. Tim Allen stars as Michael, with Martin Short as Richard, JoBeth Williams as Patricia, Lolita Davidovich as Charlotte, Sam Huntington as Mimi-Siku and David Ogden Stiers as Alexei Jovanovic, among a credited cast of 37.
Released in March 1997, the film had a budget of 32 million USD and grossed 60 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from around 28,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 533 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 from 41 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is a remake of the French film "L'Indien à Paris" (The Indian in Paris).
- After a whole day of filming, the reels were accidentally left in a taxi in New York. These scenes had to be reshot.
- The film's setting was moved from Paris to New York, and Mimi-Siku was aged up to be older than a minor, as he was in the French original. (This is because it's an American remake of the 1994 French film 'An Indian in Paris', directed by Hervé Palud.) This was mainly due to the fact that audiences in the US generally disapprove of love stories involving characters of that age (in the sense of 'not mature enough'). Additionally, Mimi-Siku grew up in the wild, but the difference in skin color between the two main characters is much less noticeable than in the French film. The difference was downplayed to emphasize their spiritual closeness.
