Short description
After the death of King Edward, the kingdom is left divided among rival heirs and threatened by invaders. Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his companions set out across a fractured country, hoping to bring England together, while competing claims to the throne and outside forces pull it further apart. Uhtred is drawn into a choice between the people closest to him and the idea of a single unified realm.
The film continues the story of the Netflix series The Last Kingdom and is based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novels. Edward Bazalgette directs from a screenplay by Martha Hillier, with Alexander Dreymon returning as Uhtred. Harry Gilby, Mark Rowley, Arnas Fedaravicius, Cavan Clerkin and James Northcote are among the credited cast of 38. Producers are Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant and Mat Chaplin.
Released in April 2023, the British production runs 111 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 43,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.2/10 from roughly 900 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1/10 from 17 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly comparable response from reviewers and viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Due to a change in the project’s format and a reduction in screen time, all scenes with characters played by Eliza Butterworth, Timothy Innes, Fia Saban, Ryan Carmby, Ruby Hartley, and Finn Elliot were cut from the film.
- Screenwriter Bernard Cornwell stated in one interview that the decision to make the character played by Harry Gilby gay in his books was based on the following facts: this character never married or had children, and he also enjoyed styling his hair. There is no historical evidence to support this assumption.
