Carmen and Juni Cortez have already proven themselves as spies, and now they work as Level 2 agents for the OSS. Their new assignment sends them to a remote island where a scientist conducts strange experiments and has surrounded himself with an unusual collection of creatures. A device hidden there could cause serious harm, and the Cortez siblings are not the only young agents trying to reach it: another brother-and-sister team competes for the same objective. Once on the island, their gadgets stop working, so the two must depend on their own abilities and on each other, with their family eventually drawn into the mission.
Robert Rodriguez directed and wrote the film, produced it with Elizabeth Avellan for Troublemaker Studios and Dimension Films, and it followed the first Spy Kids from 2001. Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara return as the siblings, with Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as their parents, and Steve Buscemi and Mike Judge among the supporting cast. Around 28 credited cast members and 80 credited crew worked on the production.
Made for about 38 million dollars, the film took roughly 120 million dollars worldwide, a return that outweighed its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from around 79,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from roughly 2,400 ratings. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 133 reviews places it above both audience scores.
