Look Who's Talking

Mollie is a successful accountant who becomes pregnant by Albert, a married man who has no intention of leaving his wife. Resolved to raise the child alone, she goes into labour and is driven to hospital by James, a taxi driver who stays by her side through the birth and keeps coming back afterwards, first as a friend and then as a babysitter for her son Mikey. Mollie sets out to find a suitable, financially secure father figure, while James quietly hopes for something more. What none of them know is that Mikey has his own opinions about who should fill the role.

The baby's thoughts are heard in voice-over, supplied by Bruce Willis, and he favours the cab driver over his mother's other suitors. Amy Heckerling directed and wrote the film, her fourth feature after Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Johnny Dangerously and National Lampoon's European Vacation, and she returned for the sequel Look Who's Talking Too the following year. John Travolta and Kirstie Alley lead the cast, with Olympia Dukakis, George Segal and Abe Vigoda in supporting parts; fifty performers are credited in all.

Made for about 8 million dollars, the film took roughly 297 million worldwide, a return far beyond its production cost. Audiences are moderate on it: 5.9/10 on IMDb from over 85,000 votes and 6.3/10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 5.4/10 from 38 reviews sits below both audience scores.
