Short description

Paul Vitti is a powerful New York mob boss who suddenly finds himself unable to hold himself together, suffering panic attacks and other symptoms that make him a liability at a time when the city's crime families are about to decide on a new leader. Relief arrives in an unlikely form when he forces himself into the practice of Dr. Ben Sobel, a psychiatrist whose ordinary patients have never prepared him for a patient like this. Sobel is given only days to sort out Vitti's state of mind, and the arrangement leaves him on call around the clock, with little room to refuse.

Harold Ramis directed and co-wrote the film with Peter Tolan and Kenneth Lonergan. It followed Groundhog Day and Multiplicity in his filmography and came before Bedazzled and Analyze That, the latter continuing the partnership of the two leads. Robert De Niro plays Vitti and Billy Crystal plays Sobel, with Lisa Kudrow as Sobel's fiancée, Laura, and Chazz Palminteri as the rival Primo Sidone.

Made for around 80 million dollars, the film took in roughly 177 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from about 169,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from a much smaller base of 2,210. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 105 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • All the restaurants shown in the film were once the sites of gangland meetings, with the exception of Sparks Steak House, where the meeting took place on the street in front of it.
  • In an effort to achieve maximum authenticity, Robert De Niro and Harold Ramis scouted for people to film on the streets of Little Italy in New York.
  • The prison scenes were filmed at Sing Sing, a maximum-security prison. Actual inmates from the prison’s drama club were used as extras in these scenes.
