Short description

Allison Jones, a young professional in New York, has just ended things with her boyfriend Sam and decides to share her apartment to ease the loneliness and the rent. She finds a quiet, eager roommate in Hedra Carlson, and the two women quickly grow close. Before long, though, Hedra's attachment turns possessive, and her habit of copying Allison's clothes, hair and mannerisms stops seeming harmless. When Allison and Sam reconcile, Hedra's jealousy takes a dangerous turn, and the friendship at the centre of the film becomes a threat.

Single White Female was released in 1992, directed by Barbet Schroeder, who also produced, from a screenplay by Don Roos. It followed Reversal of Fortune in Schroeder's filmography and was his third feature. Bridget Fonda plays Allison, with Jennifer Jason Leigh as Hedra, and Steven Weber, Peter Friedman, Stephen Tobolowsky and Frances Bay in supporting roles. Made for a budget of 16 million dollars, it took about 48 million worldwide.

Audience responses were moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from over 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from a much smaller sample. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 49 reviews places it below the audience scores. Across its 108 minutes, the film blends drama, horror and thriller elements around the shifting relationship between the two roommates.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Brigitte Fonda was initially offered one of the leading roles: Ellie or Hedy. She decided to play Ellie because she considered it a more challenging role.
