Diaz – Don't Clean Up This Blood dramatizes the events surrounding the G8 summit in Genoa in July 2001, when hundreds of thousands of demonstrators filled the city to protest against the meeting of world leaders. The story centers on the night of July 21, when police raided the Diaz-Pascoli school, where protesters, students and journalists had been sleeping. Officers entered the building and beat those inside, leaving many injured and many more detained. The film follows several people caught up in these events, among them a journalist, a German anarchist, a French manager, a trade unionist and a deputy police commissioner whose choices shape what happens.
Daniele Vicari directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Laura Paolucci, and Domenico Procacci produced. The large cast includes Claudio Santamaria, Jennifer Ulrich, Elio Germano, Davide Iacopini, Ralph Amoussou and Fabrizio Rongione, with more than a hundred credited performers and over a hundred crew members. The production was an Italian, Romanian and French co-production made for about 6 million dollars, and it took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide.
The film sits between Vicari's earlier documentary work and his later features about the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti and about a hired killer. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from about 4,200 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from around 440 votes, indicating a generally positive response from viewers. The film critics' rating stands lower, at 6.2 from five reviews.
