Little Nicky
Short description
Little Nicky centers on the youngest son of the Devil, a sweet-natured and awkward young demon who would rather play guitar than take part in the family business. When his father decides not to hand over control of Hell, Nicky's two older brothers, Cassius and Adrian, leave for New York to build a kingdom of their own. Their departure seals the gateway that sends sinful souls below, and without that flow of newcomers the Devil begins to fall apart. Nicky is sent to Earth to bring his brothers home and save his father, a task made harder by his own lack of cruelty.
The film is a comedy directed by Steven Brill, who wrote the screenplay with Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy. It followed Brill's Heavyweights and came before Mr. Deeds in his filmography. Adam Sandler stars as Nicky, with Harvey Keitel as his father, Rhys Ifans and Tommy Lister Jr. as his brothers, Patricia Arquette as Valerie Veran, and Rodney Dangerfield as Lucifer. It was produced by Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds among others.
Released in November 2000, Little Nicky cost a reported 85 million dollars and returned about 58 million worldwide, a shortfall against its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from roughly 119,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 112 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on November 2, 1999, in New York and wrapped up at the end of March 2000.
- During the filming of the basketball game scene, Dana Carvey, who played the referee, broke his ankle. So he spent the remaining shooting days with a cane.
- Quentin Tarantino plays the episodic role of a blind priest who goes mad as Nicky approaches.
- Midway through the film, when Nikki enters Heaven, dance instructor Chaps appears. Holly mentions that he was once a professional golfer on Earth. This is a reference to the film 'Happy Gilmore' (1996), in which actor Carl Weathers played the role of a former professional golfer.
- To defeat his arrogant brother, Nikki calls upon rock singer Ozzy Osbourne. The latter simply bites the head off the demon, who has transformed into a bat.
- Patricia Arquette was cast as Valerie without even an audition.
- Dustin Hoffman was originally cast as Satan, but was later replaced by Harvey Keitel.
