A group of industrial spies steals a secret microchip designed for military use and hides it inside a remote-control toy car to smuggle it through airport security. A mix-up in baggage handling puts the toy in the hands of an elderly woman, Mrs. Hess, who gives it to a young neighbour, Alex Pruitt. Alex is confined at home with chicken pox while his parents are at work and his siblings at school, so when the thieves track the chip to his Chicago suburb and begin searching the neighbourhood, he is on his own. The spies, professionals rather than bungling burglars, try to get into the house, and Alex, who knows his way around electronics and mechanics, prepares to defend it.
The film is the third entry in the Home Alone series, written and produced by John Hughes, who had written the earlier instalments, and directed by Raja Gosnell in his feature debut. Gosnell had worked as an editor before this; his later films include Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House and the two Scooby-Doo films. Alex D. Linz plays Alex Pruitt, with Olek Krupa, Rya Kihlstedt, Lenny Von Dohlen and David Thornton as the spies, and Haviland Morris as Alex's mother.
Made for a budget of 32 million USD, the film took about 79 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.6/10 from 138,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3/10 from 3,370 votes; a critics' rating stands at 4.6/10 from 25 reviews, putting professional and audience assessments close together.
